What annoys you when it comes up in webcomics? You know, like when it happens, you just feel anything from minor annoyance to pure rage with the person writing the comic. Here's stuff that annoys me:

- People who write their comic right to left for no reason other than it being the way the Japanese write comics. They are obviously too dumb to realise that Japanese reads from right to left, hence the comics read that way, and so using the same logic as the Japanese ought to mean they should write left to right.

- When somebody just puts their comic is 'for open minded people' rather than saying 'for people who don't mind nudity/foul language/violence/gay sex/anti [...] religion stuff' which would make it much easier to pick a comic that won't offend you personally.

-When you're reading a comic, thinking you've finally found a really cool female character, and it turns out it's supposed to be a male character who looks, acts and talks exactly like a girl, and you're supposed to have known from the start it was a male character even though the artist never specified a gender and doesn't have the artistic ability to differenciate a girly guy from a girl.

-When people set their comics in Japan, without even doing minor research about life in Japan, and even though the comic being in Japan has no impact on the plot anyway.

- Overuse of the words 'Kawaii', 'Hai' and 'Neko'.

- When artists threaten to stop making their comic just to get attention.

-When artists stop their comic, say they'll redo it all from the beginning and neither redo, nor continue it ever again.

-When people do comics that are clearly just ripoffs of '8-bit theatre' or 'Penny Arcade'.

- When 'Penny Arcade' wins every single webcomic award going despite being rather mediocre.

- When an obscure reference to American politics comes up in a comic and I'm supposed to find it funny. Heck, I don't write comics that go 'soo, how about Gordon Brown, eh? hahaha.'

-When a comic makes a strip that is only funny if you consistantly read another comic that the artist reads and if you don't just doesn't make sense, never mind make you laugh.

- Comics that drown in their own success, forget why they were funny, try to replicate their original humour mechanically and come out soulless and dull... cough*PENNY ARCADE!*

-When comics decide, 'Hey, I can't think of a joke, oh I know, I'll take the piss out of Megatokyo...harhar, Piro is angsty and often behind schedule in his drawings!' >_< That spoof was funny...four years ago.

OH MY GOD, SO MUCH RAGE. Part of the reason I do not READ manga is because I CAN'T READ THAT SHIT. English-as-first-language eyes are trained to real left-to-right. So you end up looking at the pages backwards, then having to read the text within the proper way and IT IS SO LAMELY REDUNDANT. NGARRR. YOU ARE AN ENGLISH SPEAKER, IT'S OKAY, WE WON'T HATE YOU FOR IT.

ALSO EVERYTHING ELSE BUT MOSTLY THAT ONE. GRRRR.

To add on to the "setting: Japan" one...

When people set their comics IN Japan, yet ALL OF THEIR CHARACTERS have American names, use American slang, generally ARE American. Exchange students are an exception, but the ones with absolutely NO reference to ANY exchange students at all are just... bauogheoihgo;eai ._.

I also kinda roll my eyes at the cliched "OH NOES I BE LATE FOR SKOOL!!!1!!IH!IH!!" opening to a comic.

... oh titty biscuits, wait a minute >.>

Though I have done the redo thing quite often ^^; By quite I mean frequently. I want to do some of the beginning pages (see: the first 80) over again, but I restrain myself, saying I'll never... you know... get DONE if I do that ._.
But I at least have the GALL to actually stick to my word and redo it. Never seen anyone who hasn't... that must get annoying >.>

Hmm, having loads of characters with western names in a Japanese setting is an annoying one. But almost as annoying is when the story is set in a non-Japanese place and the whole cast have Japanese names. What the heck? They don't even use interesting Japanese names either. Even worse is when they don't even look up a Japanese name and make up something that just SOUNDS Japanese, or when they look up a random Japanese word, often an adjective and decide it can be a name.

Yes, the 'oh noes, I'm late for school!' opening needs to die. Not only was it a little overused as a silly magical girl cliche in the nineties, but it doesn't tend to make a character any more endearing. It's like 'this is Aoi Yasashii, she has a name comprised entirely of adjectives looked up in a Japanese/English dictionary, a really generic personality which is basically the personality of the writer but with no sign of any flaws...how can we make her more endearing? Oh! Let's have her be a goof who is sometimes almost late for school and get worried about it in a cute, funny way! Yeah, that'll make her a more interesting character!'

Ooh, I hate that >< Like they expect people not to notice or something? Can't vouch for any adjective names, but I've seen moret han my share of instances of names made up on the spot which the author merely thinks sounds Japanese. Using letters that typically aren't part of the Japanese alphabet is a big hint-on to that ._.

And Mary Sues = death. Like, really ._.

I make up all my names, or take a random word and make it a name.

This includes words in other lagauges. So I sometimes get accused of using weird Japanese words as names. ^^;

But I also have characters named the following:

Train
Pocky
Anshu = Hindu for "Sunshine"
Accord
Royal
Scrape
Aries (*chuckles*)

And I got chewed out for naming a character Akagawa Hunter until I explained he was half-Japanese. o.o; Thus the American first name and the Japanese surname. He was the only character like that in that particular story.

Any characters with Japanese names in my works are generally not my characters, just ones I am drawing for other people because I am too nice.

Train is a frickin' awesome name, Rei.

Smushing-syllables-that-sound-vaguely-japaese together is What ho! pip pip, tra la!. I mean, if you did that with english, you'd get names like "Bidam" (Which sounds like something from FF10) or "Richank".

Come to think of it, Richank is a pretty ridiculously awesome name. It is now Mr. Smithjones's firstname. Richank Smithjones.

*posts despite lack of anyone seeing it* My friend named a character Kikish because she said it sounded Japanese.

I pointed out that I have never heard the "sh" sound in Japanese and she got huffy. XD

but that was an RPG no one was ever going to see but the two of us.
