Hyper Down :(evidently the domain name expired guys. But the good news is that all the data still exists.
Hopefully Coby is renewing the name. I have emailed to ask her about it.
If she is, wonderful. If she's not, we'll need a new domain name to plug the existing site back into - so maybe think of some names or something.
Hopefully - the name is being renewed and things will go as before, just with a little hiccup.
Our apologies for the inconvenience.

Thanks, Rainy.
Okay, guys. It's not the end of the world, even if hyper really is gone for good, we can make a NEW, BETTER hyper! ^_^ ...But it might be back tomorrow. Just don't worry okay? We're trying to get a response from Coby at the moment.
For now, feel free to brainstorm ideas and hang out here.

Still not back up. I'm almost hoping Coby DOESN'T renew, because that would let the site pass into the hands of the people who actually use it.

Thanks, Milan. It's nice to know my forum is comparable to a subterranean concrete bunker.
Rainy was thinking 'Hyper-' something for a name. Personally I'm not fussed. Donut and I have discussed ideas for a site called 'Divine Comickry' in the past, so that name could be on the table.
Obviously, we don't HAVE to have 'comics' in the title. Drunk Duck and Smackjeeves both do without. Still, it's worth considering that a title that's explanatory can help.
Oh yeah. Feel free to spam up the general chat and make yourselves at home until we get this mess sorted. Oh, and can somebody please contact Oub? I have no contact for her!

though we once had children, i have never gotten oub's contact info. so i can not help you.
why don't we call it. Hyper-Land

... <.<;;;
I'll just say it.
I'd rather start a new site than go on with Coby as our "fearless" leader.
I don't like the idea of being ignored for months at a time. Rainy, I at least knew, would do it because of legitimate reasons. Because she actually took the time to explain it.
Coby just doesn't care. There. I said it. She doesn't care or even like most of us. I get the distinct impression she is particularly unliking of myself and Kate.
However, out of everyone to ever come through that site, Kate cares more about comics, people who make comics and the art behind comics than anyone I have ever met. Kate puts more effort into helping, progressing and improving the site than it's own owner does.
Kate, if you'll purchase a new domain and site, and Rainy, if you'll help us code it and put it all together, I'll send you donations to help you pay for it. whenever I can. But in truth, I'd much rather follow Kate and be part of her vision than put up with Coby and her lack of vision.
So who's with me?

All I'm going to say is come next Friday when I actually have money in my bank account, I'd love to start pulling together DIVINE COMICKRY. Because Kate and I have been talking about it for like a year now.
edit: Okay, guys.
Friday I am buying a domain- I've been thinking of this for a while, now- for my own personal use.
If you guys want, it'll be a new place to play.
If we take the donutboat, it won't be much like Hyper. I tire of auto-upload sites. The internet is FULL of them. I want more of a stable collective of the close friends I've made via Hyper. I'd like more of a... domain shared via subdomains or subfolders than the sort of incredibly flawed auto-upload system we've been working with for so long. There are so many auto-upload sites. I think a comics collective sort of thing would be more professional, sort of. We could each have our places to put our various comics and do, like, portfolios and stuff. And have a shared forum thing. Maybe?
This is just what I've been toying with. Feel free to tell me I'm stupid. !
|
Charil
|
I like the donutboat. A lot.
Forget that, I'm not going to say anything after all >.>
I still like the donutboat.
I personally am getting a job in like, two weeks, and was going to purchase my own domain with my first paycheck, so I... kinda sorta don't really mind if the old Hyper/any sort of comic uploader returns or not. Not like that really matters at all xD
|
darthmongoose
|
I may have mentioned before, I have NO money. Seriously. Really no money at all, so me purchasing a domain is kind of impossible.
Personally, I would still like to keep an auto-upload thing, because actually the only ones I know of that do this specifically for comics are Smackjeeves, which is full of arseholes, and Drunkduck.
On the other hand, I see where Donut is coming from, and she probably knows more about this than I do.
Hmmm.....
What about a site where you have to join the forums, introduce yourself and get approved to start uploading? Once approved, you get a little 'CV' page like thing instead of your common garden user profile, which links through to things you've done and uploaded. Comics, gallery of images, maybe even prose and poetry? Your 'CV' page could double as a homepage/artist's page and the front page for your webcomic, and would be customisable. Everybody's pages would be linked to the hub, where there would maybe be a front page, a forum and a (working) chat.
...I hope some of that made sense and sounded vaguely feasible.
...Oh, and I should not be put in charge of anything. Second in command I can handle, especially when I'm given specific orders to carry out, but my short attention span is a recipe for disaster if I'm in charge.
|
jesse
|
Kate, I think you just described exactly what a few of us have been pushing for for a long time. In other words, yes, perfect, let's do that.
On the other hand, I don't like the idea of being exclusive, even if I do like the idea of a comics collective. Why couldn't we have a site that welcomes and hosts everyone with a comics collective at its core? Sort of like Keenspace/Keenspot used to be. That way we could let the comic artists grow and improve or the comics gain in popularity to the point where we would invite them to join the collective. Does that make sense?

I have monnies and a domain that I barely use, but it is my own personal site and I'd perfer not to have to use it. However, it sounds like the donutboat is ready for docking and since she really wants to do this, I shall board. D:
And I dunno... I think if we say no to sprite comics, doujinshi, and porn, we'd be like DD without those things, y'know?
The question is of coding. We're not talking about plugging in the old HC site into a new domain, we're talking about recreating the entire site. I mean, don't get me wrong, I took two web design classes and I can make a cool looking site, but as for knowing how to make the autoupload forms work? I don't. If Oub would get online so I can tell here where we are, we would have a good content supervisor, right?
So maybe before we go too far, let's work on basics.
It's Donut's site (probably), so therefore the name with be Divine Comickry. And therefore no matter what we discuss she gets the final say.
Personally, I like the idea of being an elitist community who picks to upload your comic, not the other way around. But that's going to be a lot of work for a lot of time because not everyone who graces us is going to know enough HTML or CSS or whatever to upload their own comic, which means we'd have to.
An auto-upload site would be a lot of work in the beginning to figure out the coding (since I'm not sure if Rainy will help us or not...? Not that I doubt you Rainy, but I probably offended you with all this bashing of Coby, so I'm no longer sure. Not to mention you may not have time to do any of this.). But once it was done, it would just be a matter of upkeep. Making sure the comics don't break the TOS, fixing bugs, etc.
Being an elitist community would mean we'd have to be willing to hurt a lot of feelings by rejecting people and saying their not good enough. Which I don't know that any of us has the heart to do.
But being auto-upload means we'll have people who make comics that are about things we hate or that are just plain stupid.
There are several pros and cons and we also need to know how everyone can help. All I can do is create pretty navigation and images and maybe help with some of the HTML.
|

|
i'd be for it! I'd even pitch in with costs when i have a steady income and whatnot if it was needed.
I've actually had the same idea for ages, i just didn't really think anyone would be into it.
and i like your idea jesse. in a way it could be seen as elitist... but... actually I'm kind of elitist so i don't really care.
but as long as we can find some way of dealing with newcomers needs. because with newcomers come a demand for more space and whatnot... but that can probably be dealt with later when we are actually sure this is a for sure thing.
I really think jesse kind of culminated the ideas really well. so i say woot for jesse's idea sandwich.
EDIT: rei, i can detach myself from things very easily, so i could be the one to tell people there not good enough.
also html wise we could just set up a bunch of templates for people for their home page. with some super easy instructions on uploading and whatnot. or use an HTML wizard sorta thing, kinda like H-C had for it's sub domains
|
darthmongoose
|
With regards to the elitism thing, I'm not sure I like just telling people they suck, but let's just say there has to be a minimum level of EFFORT put into any comic we allow on the site and a clearly defined set of rules on content and will be given a look over by a review panel.
Something like:
No RIPPED sprites. Original pixel art comics are allowed.
No stick figures/talking circles drawn in MSPaint.
Cut and Paste comics would be viewed on a case-by-case basis dependant mostly on writing quality, how repetitive they are etc.
If pages are large enough to cause double scrollbar action on a 800x600 rez, we won't allow them to upload until they size down.
No pornographic content/hentai. Limited or partial nudity is allowed for storyline freedom, at the discretion of the 'panel'.
Text in the comic must be legible.
If a comic is blatantly offensive for whatever reason, panel members can veto it.
Comics that don't pass will be told precisely what they would have to change in order to get on the site, ie. 'please size down your pages and either type your text or write more neatly', or 'Sorry, we have a blanket policy against sprite comic submissions'.

i agree with all of the above
and i can dish out 3 bucks a month like I've been doing :3
I think the problem we had at hyper was those inactive members.
The ones that dumped their comics once and pretty much never came back
to talk on the forums or even worse not update at all.
what we've discussed before was death threats... er, i mean
that system where inactive users get removed or something after
a certain amount of time or whatever. That should happen.
Or even before that, adding to what DM just said, there should be
some "I will definitely be active on this site so please let me in"
sorta contract thing for people wanting to join or something
...
...
well, overall the new hyper has to be more...strict... i guess
and not so loose like it has been for the last four years or so.
Thats why I think hyper wasnt taken very seriously by people and
even its owner.

I agree with that sentiment... even though I sort of was/am one of those members. (This is "Kailing" by the way) I also belong to a writing forum (hence, to some degree, my inactivity... though part of it is definitely that I am rather flakey if no one pins me down to commitment)... in said writing forum there is an "activity check" roughly once a month. If a user has been inactive for over a month their account is deleted. Also, if a user is just dumping their works into the forum and not critiquing anyone else’s to any degree they suffer the same fate. All members come into the picture knowing this as it is part of the sign up and in a letter that is PMed to them upon joining.
Also, users are not allowed to post their own work until they've had a certain amount of forum posts. This encourages them to embrace the community aspect of the site/really meet the other members enough to know if they are comfortable exposing their work to such a crowd.
... that's all I've got... except for funds. I may be able to chip in a bit cost wise after my new job starts. (Yay for adult-like powers over my money and where it goes.) I've always loved this community, you guys are all total stars and star dolls. Don't ask me what that means, just trust that it's positive.

where is donut the almighty.
she's kinda the one who would be buying the site. would she be able to afford the space for all these possible newcomers?
maybe we'll have to start off small and grow from there... because you know. tree's don't grow money on demand. in fact money is made from jean material. at least the Canadian and American bills.
that is all.

I don't think we should force forum participation, but I think if their comic has not updated for a month, we send them an email asking "Do you plan on updating this comic ever again?"
If they say no or do not respond in a week, we delete the comic. If they say yes, we ask again in another month.
We continue until the comic has reached fifty pages, after which time we just leave it alone.
You gotta remember, PA has gone on six month hiatuses but I always go back to it, so instant deletion doesn't seem fair. >.>;
I kinda wanna say no to sprite comics in general. But maybe that's bias talking.

yeah thats what i meant as regarding forum activity...
if your on the forum regularly then you can pass with not having updated
